About Me

Aaah, yes: the terribly awkward “About Me” page. Back in my single days, I once tried online dating and sat, totally stumped, for hours while trying to figure out what to say in the “About Me” section.

As it turns out, writer’s block helps ensure that online dating won’t exactly be a wildly successful endeavor. Who knew?

Soooo, anyways…about me: I’m perpetually hungry. I love both healthy cooking and fitness, but I have a shameless love of brain candy in the form of rom-coms and celeb gossip. I read voraciously. I’m a displaced Colorado gal living in DC, and sometimes my nostalgia for the mountains and good green chili starts to drive me slowly insane. I have an endless love of  green smoothies, music that runs the gamut from teen pop to jazz to gangsta rap, and irreverent comedies. I have a secret dream that someday I’ll be on vacation in London, run into John Cleese (of Monty Python fame) and that we’ll be able to have gluten-free crumpets and tea while being sarcastic together. I love both shoes and football, and I once simultaneously owned both a pink iPod mini and a subscription to Sports Illustrated.

Aside from my family, friends, and the husband who I didn’t meet online — which is a good thing because he probably would’ve been creeped out by my “About Me” section — one of my greatest joys is writing. I’ve moved what was originally meant to be a healthy living blog to this shiny new website (jazz hands!) so I can write about the approximately 8 bajillion topics that occupy my brain on a daily basis, including international intrigue, women’s issues, healthy cookin’, inspiration, fitness, and life as a thirty-something woman who’s trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up.

    hi, I super admire you and your blog. Also in my thirties. Yet struggling (at rock bottom physcially, financially, emotionally with eating issues and downfalls)> also love writing and yet lack focus, structure, organization…would love your tips on structuring, how to eat right, stop my binging, a basic workout plan, ANYTHING 🙂 Trust me…I’m lost …oh so lost…Can you email me?       I’m so sorry to hear that you’re at such a low point — I’ve been there too, and it’s awful.

      While I’m not in a position to help with a lot of these things, there are some good resources around the web that might help you out. Regarding eating issues, I highly recommend reading peoples’ blogs on recovering from eating disorders. Angela Liddon at Oh She Glows (http://ohsheglows.com) has written extensively on this, as has Sloane at Strength in Freedom (http://strengthinfreedom.com/). You might do well to visit your local library and see if you can find books on this as well — it’s free, and it could help give you some insight on how to heal.

      Regarding exercise, different things work for different people — but the thing that works best for me is to create a routine/schedule and stick to it. There are all sorts of great free resources/videos around the Web: Fitness Blender, Yoga Downloads, Do Yoga With Me, and FitSugar are my go-to guides.

      Lastly, the issue of how to eat right is a tricky one. This is another area where different things work for different people, and it’s another case where you might do well to check out some blogs for inspiration. There are people who love being vegan, others who love being Paleo, and others who love intuitive eating — basically, no one thing works for everyone. Try different things on for size and see how you feel; one of the things I’m learning is that it helps a lot to move towards (and do more of) the things that make me feel energized, edified, and alive, and it could help to take that same approach with food.
